Brigitte (Twinky) Laubscher
Born 1975 Cape Town, South Africa
About the Artist…
Showing talent at an early age, Twinky was encouraged to pursue a career in art from the time she was old enough to hold a crayon and paint brush. As a result, she is enjoying a successful career in painting and clay sculpture with many of the paintings being sold internationally.
Education...
Twinky has spent most of her life in South Africa where her unique talent was fashioned. Her formal art education was shaped by well-known South African artist J de Villiers (sculptor), Jill Trappler and Elske Maxwell (painting). After several years of formal Art education, she began using her skill to teach, exhibit and participate in art workshops. The Thupelo Organization offered Twinky an opportunity to participate in their bi-annual workshops and exhibitions, which included international artists. This resulted in her gaining international recognition.
Influences...
Her influences are eclectic, a mix of old masters and primitive art. Picasso, Giacometti, Bacon, Appel, Dali amongst others. She contrasts objects, symbols, marks and surfaces in an attempt to explore the connection between the diverse elements chosen. Twinky explores the dynamic paradox and complexity of the human experience. The art of creation and experimentation is her starting point, and the concept evolves during the creative process of the artwork.
Style and Format...
Twinky aims at painting without preconceptions, so that the process is open to free expression and development. Each artwork is a direct and spontaneous encounter between her and the medium she uses. She has a sensual response, as opposed to an attempt at conceptual control. This approach is applied to both her figurative and abstract paintings and sculptures. She uses a subtractive process which leaves a degree of uncertainty as to the outcome. The result is a record of what remains after the repeated processes of application and subtraction, and the perfect balance is found. Her talent has led her to develop a technique which is unique to herself. This is immediately evident when faced with one of her works - you immediately recognise it as a 'Twinky'.
Exhibitions...
During an 18 month stay in North Carolina, (USA), Twinky showed her work at the Greensboro Artists League, and the Two Chicks Art Gallery. In addition, the state of North Carolina invited her to exhibit at the 2002 Raleigh Fine Arts Guild. In South Africa her work can be found at the National Gallery and the University of Cape Town Law Library. She has sold her work to private collectors all over the world and is in the process of preparing for a new exhibition.
